The Depths

Unearthing ancient secrets beneath Indraprastha, archaeologists invoke the wrath of serpentine Nāga guardians, leading to a night of terror and a desperate ritual to appease them.

Beneath the bustling streets of Indraprastha, a realm forgotten by time and shrouded in darkness stirs. The Nāga, serpentine beings of immense power and wrath, guardians of the earth’s deepest secrets, are awakened by a breach between worlds, caused by human encroachment on sacred ground. A group of unsuspecting archaeologists, driven by ambition, unearth a sealed entrance to what they believe is a previously undiscovered chamber beneath an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Ignoring the warnings etched in Sanskrit on the temple walls, they break the seal, unleashing a curse that has been dormant for millennia.

The city of Indraprastha, known as Delhi in the old world, begins to experience inexplicable phenomena. Shadows lengthen without a source, chilling whispers echo through the night, and the water of the Yamuna turns ominously black. The citizens are plagued by nightmares of serpentine figures whispering ancient curses. The Nāga, enraged by the desecration, emerge from the shadows. They are beings of terrifying power and malice, capable of manipulating reality itself. They seek retribution not just on the archaeologists but on all of humanity for the disrespect shown to their sacred domain.

In desperation, the archaeologists seek the help of a secretive sect devoted to Mā Kālī. The sect, supremely ancient in its paddhati, reveals that the only way to appease the Nāga is to offer them a sacrifice that mirrors the gravity of the transgression. A ritual must be performed on the night of Amavasya, where the lines between the physical and the spiritual are at their thinnest. Under the veil of darkness, with the city enveloped in an eerie silence, the ritual begins on the ghats of the Yamuna. As the sect’s lead upāsakas chants ancient hymns, the water begins to churn, and the air thickens with a palpable sense of dread. The Nāga, drawn to the ritual, reveal themselves in their terrifying glory, their eyes glowing with an otherworldly light.

The ritual takes a horrifying turn as the Nāga demand a sacrifice far greater than anticipated. The boundaries between the realms collapse, and the entities that enter are not just the Nāga but the tormented ātmās of those they have claimed over centuries. The city is enveloped in a night of terror, where the living and the dead walk together. As dawn breaks, the city of Indraprastha finds itself forever changed. The Nāga retreat to their realm, but the scars of the night’s horrors remain. The archaeologists are found in a state of shock, unable to comprehend the full extent of the terror they unleashed. The city whispers of the night when the veil was lifted, and the price of human curiosity was laid bare.
