The Clearing That Cannot Be Lit

On why consciousness is the precondition of all explanation, not one more thing awaiting it

David Chalmers published “Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness” in 1995, and in the three decades since, the philosophical community has managed to generate a vast and impressively circular literature around a question it has not come measurably closer to answering. The hard problem — why is there something it is like to be a conscious creature? — has spawned functionalist rebuttals, eliminativist dismissals, panpsychist expansions, integrated information theories, global workspace models, higher-order thought accounts, and quantum-gravitational speculations. None of them dissolves the problem. Most of them, on close inspection, don’t even make contact with it.

The reason is not that consciousness is especially mysterious in the way that dark matter or the origin of life is mysterious — problems where we lack data or the right instruments or enough time. The reason is that the hard problem is not a problem of the ordinary kind. It is a sign of a category error built into the explanatory project itself, and no amount of better science will remove a category error.

What follows is not a defense of mysterianism, which concedes the framing while simply denying the solution. It is an argument that the question is being asked from the wrong position entirely — and that once you see the position from which it must be asked, the hard problem does not dissolve into triviality but transforms into something far more interesting: a philosophical fact about the structure of inquiry itself.


Every explanation proceeds from somewhere. When we explain a phenomenon — the refraction of light, the spread of a pathogen, the collapse of a dynasty — we position ourselves as observers standing outside the phenomenon and accounting for it in terms of more fundamental or better-known things. The explanatory gesture is always outward and downward: from the explanandum to the explanans, from the specific to the general, from the unfamiliar to the familiar. What makes this gesture possible is that both the explainer and the explained occupy, in principle, the same ontological plane. The physicist explaining refraction is made of the same stuff as the refracting photon. Explanation works when its subject matter is, at least in principle, the kind of thing that can be approached from the outside.

Consciousness is not that kind of thing.

This is not because consciousness is supernatural. It is because consciousness is not a phenomenon that appears within experience — it is the appearing itself. When we try to explain why there is subjective experience, we find ourselves in the peculiar position of using experience to explain experience, deploying the very medium whose existence is in question. The attempt is like trying to illuminate a room by putting the light source inside the lamp: the lamp is the condition of the illumination, not its object.

Edmund Husserl saw this clearly, though he framed it differently. His project of transcendental phenomenology rested on the insight that the natural attitude — our ordinary assumption that consciousness is one more thing in the world, a property of brains located in space — already presupposes what it needs to explain. Before you can investigate consciousness as a natural phenomenon, consciousness must already be there, performing the investigation. Every description of consciousness, every third-person account, every neural correlate study, already lives inside a first-person act of intentionality that the study takes for granted. You cannot step outside the frame. There is no Archimedean point from which to observe experience observing things.

The contemporary neuroscientist does not typically read Husserl, but she unwittingly inherits his problem. When she identifies the neural correlates of consciousness — the thalamocortical loops, the global workspace broadcasts, the gamma-band synchrony — she is describing the structural and causal conditions under which certain experiences reliably occur. She is not, even in principle, explaining why those conditions are accompanied by experience rather than darkness. Why should any physical process be “like” anything at all? The explanatory gap is not a gap between two physical facts. It is a gap between physical facts and the fact of phenomenality itself, and no accumulation of physical facts can bridge it, because bridging it would require deriving subjectivity from objectivity, which is to derive the category of all experience from a category that is defined by its exclusion of the experiential.


The standard moves all fail at this point, and they fail in instructive ways.

Functionalism — the view that mental states are defined by their functional roles, their causal relationships to inputs, outputs, and other mental states — handles the easy problems of mind with elegance. It explains why pain causes avoidance behavior, why beliefs and desires interact to produce action, why perception is responsive to the environment. What it cannot explain is why any of this should feel like anything. A perfect functional duplicate of a human being, a philosophical zombie that processes information and produces behavior indistinguishable from a conscious creature while having no inner life, is not incoherent on functionalist terms. The functionalist must deny that such a thing is conceivable, but this denial looks increasingly like motivated reasoning. You can always add more functional structure — more global access, more higher-order representation, more recurrent processing — and the question of why this structure should be accompanied by experience remains untouched.

Eliminativism tries a different move: it denies that there is anything to explain. Folk psychological concepts like “qualia” and “phenomenal consciousness” are confused, and once neuroscience matures, we will simply replace them with accurate physical descriptions. The trouble is that eliminativism is self-undermining in a peculiar way. The argument against the existence of phenomenal consciousness is itself made from within phenomenal consciousness. The eliminativist believes her argument, and believing — actually undergoing the cognitive state of finding an argument compelling, of having it seem true — is itself a phenomenal event. You cannot use experience to argue that experience does not exist in the relevant sense. The move is available only if you already grant the thing you’re trying to eliminate.

Integrated Information Theory (IIT), Giulio Tononi’s ambitious framework, proposes that consciousness is identical to integrated information, measured by the quantity phi. It is the most mathematically serious attempt to close the explanatory gap, and it has attracted both significant interest and significant criticism. The problem is not the mathematics but the identification. Why should integrated information be accompanied by experience? The theory tells us which physical systems have high phi and which have low phi, and it correlates this with our intuitions about which systems are conscious. But this is still a correlation, not an explanation. The question of why integrated information feels like anything at all is the hard problem restated, not resolved. Moreover, IIT implies that certain simple physical systems with the right structure — logic gates, thermostats under some interpretations — have some degree of consciousness, which many find more incredible than the problem it was meant to solve.

Panpsychism, which holds that consciousness or proto-conscious properties are fundamental features of the physical world, is increasingly fashionable precisely because the other options seem foreclosed. If consciousness cannot be derived from non-conscious matter, perhaps it was there all along, built into the fabric of things. Philip Goff has argued for this with unusual clarity and philosophical sophistication. The approach has real virtues — it takes seriously the explanatory gap rather than papering over it, and it is continuous with certain respectable traditions in Western and non-Western thought. But panpsychism faces its own characteristic difficulty: the combination problem. If electrons have proto-conscious properties, how do the proto-conscious properties of the neurons in your brain combine to produce the unified, integrated stream of experience you are having right now? No satisfying answer has been given. The hard problem dissolves into an equally hard problem about combination, and we are back where we started.


What all these approaches share is a commitment to treating consciousness as an explanandum — a phenomenon that stands before the tribunal of theory and must give an account of itself. This commitment is so deep that it structures the entire field. The question is always: what is consciousness made of, or what functional role does it play, or what information structure does it instantiate? The question is never: what is the status of this inquiry itself?

When you ask the second question, things look different.

Explanation is not a neutral, view-from-nowhere activity. It is something that happens inside experience. Every scientific hypothesis, every theoretical proposal, every measurement and its interpretation — these are all experiences in the phenomenological sense. They are events in the stream of consciousness of scientists. The scientific enterprise, in its entirety, exists within experience. Not because experience is more real than the physical world (that would be idealism of a crude kind), but because the process of explaining the physical world is always already an experiential process. The map is always drawn by hands that are not on the map.

This does not mean that science cannot tell us important things about consciousness. It can tell us a great deal about the neural correlates of consciousness, about the information-processing structures that accompany different kinds of experience, about the evolutionary pressures that shaped the architecture of mind, about the conditions under which experiences of various kinds arise and cease. These are genuine discoveries about the natural world. But they are discoveries made from within consciousness, and the fact of consciousness — that there is a “within” — is not itself a discovery that can be made from within.

The phenomenologists understood this structural situation clearly, though their vocabulary was sometimes cumbersome. Heidegger’s insistence that Dasein always already finds itself in a world, that the theoretical attitude is a derivative mode of being-in-the-world rather than its foundation, points to the same insight: you cannot explain the ground by standing on it. Maurice Merleau-Ponty, working from the lived body rather than abstract transcendental structures, arrived at the same boundary from a different angle — the body as the pre-objective subject of experience, always already in the world before any act of theoretical reflection, irreducible to any object in the world.

What this tradition offers is not a solution to the hard problem but a reorientation. The hard problem appears as a problem because we assume that consciousness ought to be explainable in the same way that anything else is explainable — from the outside, in terms of more fundamental constituents or causal structures. But consciousness is not outside-able in this way. It is the clearing in which things appear, including the things we call physical reality. You can study everything that happens in the clearing. You cannot study the clearing from outside it, because outside it there is nothing — no observer, no standpoint, no inquiry.


There is a tradition of thought that grasped this not as a puzzle but as the primary datum of philosophical inquiry. In the Kashmiri Shaivite tradition, the concept of prakasha-vimarsha — roughly, luminosity and self-reflective awareness — names the nature of consciousness as it was understood by thinkers like Abhinavagupta in the tenth century. Consciousness is not a property of objects, not a function performed by systems, not a derivative of any more fundamental process. It is svaprakasha, self-luminous, that which illuminates itself and all else, that by which everything is known but which itself is not known by any prior knowing. This is not mysticism in the sense of deliberate obscurity. It is a precise philosophical claim: the attempt to explain consciousness from outside consciousness presupposes consciousness at every step, which means that consciousness has logical priority over any explanation of it.

The Advaita Vedantic concept of chit — pure consciousness, the second member of the sat-chit-ananda formula — makes the same point in different terms. Chit is not the consciousness of something. It is the fundamental nature of awareness itself, prior to the subject-object structure that characterizes ordinary cognition. Ramana Maharshi, working in this tradition two centuries later, would say simply: to ask “who is conscious?” you must already be conscious. The inquiry loops back to its own source.

Neither of these traditions would regard the hard problem as hard in quite the sense Chalmers intended, because they would reject the starting assumption that generates the problem — the assumption that consciousness is one natural phenomenon among others, awaiting a place in the natural order. For them, consciousness is the natural order’s condition of possibility, not one of its products. The investigation cannot reach behind its own enabling ground.


None of this means the study of consciousness is futile. On the contrary, it means that certain questions become newly available once we stop demanding answers of the wrong kind. We can investigate, rigorously and with genuine philosophical depth, the structure of experience — its intentionality, its temporality, its embodied character, its social dimensions, the ways it varies across individuals and species and altered states. We can map, with neuroscientific precision, the conditions under which experiences arise and change. We can ask, with genuine curiosity, what the relationship is between the phenomenological and the physical — not assuming that one reduces to the other, but probing the interface carefully, without foreclosing the question in advance.

What we cannot do, and should stop pretending we can do, is explain why there is experience at all by pointing to things that are themselves experienced. The hard problem is not hard because we haven’t thought hard enough about it. It is hard because it is, in a precise and philosophically recoverable sense, the wrong kind of question — asked from the wrong side of the boundary, by an inquirer who is already the answer.

The clearing cannot be lit from outside. It was already lit before we arrived, and it is still lit when we leave. That fact is not mysterious in the pejorative sense. It is simply the first fact — the one that makes all others possible, and the one that no explanation will ever, even in principle, surpass.
