Education for Civilization
Education and civilization, including Targowski's civilization approach to 21st-century education, comparative education systems, and wisdom education
Andrew Targowski’s “The Civilization Approach to Education in the 21st Century” in v65 is a foundational statement of CCR’s treatment of education as a civilizational question. Targowski argues that education systems must be evaluated not just on economic or cognitive criteria but on their success in transmitting civilization — wisdom, culture, civic responsibility, and the capacity for civilizational renewal. The approach is informed by his broader work on Western Civilization in the 21st Century and From Globalization Waves to Global Civilization.
Vlad Alalykin-Izvekov’s “Andrew Targowski – Educating for Wisdom” in v87 is part of the special issue on “Hope and Pessimism in ‘Classical’ 20th Century Civilizational Theory.” It treats Targowski’s educational philosophy as a contemporary alternative to the cultural pessimism of Spengler, the cyclical catastrophe of Toynbee, and the calamity-and-reconstruction of Sorokin. Targowski’s “Wisdom Civilization” is presented as a positive civilizational goal.
In v92, Joseph Drew proposes “Want To Help Develop a Textbook on Comparative Civilizations?” with a 15-week course outline covering introduction, theoretical frameworks, cultural and social approaches, political and economic approaches, civilizational analysis, and case studies of ancient, classical, medieval, early modern and modern civilizations.
In v93, “Intellectual Risk-Taking and Emotional Intelligence in Educational Systems: A Comparative Study of the USA, Finland, Japan, and Singapore” compares four national education systems along two dimensions — Intellectual Risk-Taking (IRT) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) — drawing implications for civilizational education.
